1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 While he was thinking thus elatedly, he remembered that he wantedsome clean linen in the morning.
2. Suddenly he looked up.
3. "He could go along," said Carrie.
4. Beginning with half-past six, he hovered like a shadow about theThirty-ninth Street entrance, pretending always to be a hurryingpedestrian and yet fearful lest he should miss his object. Hewas slightly nervous, too, now that the eventful hour hadarrived; but being weak and hungry, his ability to suffer wasmodified. At last he saw that the actors were beginning toarrive, and his nervous tension increased, until it seemed as ifhe could not stand much more.
5. "Are you a stenographer or typewriter?"
6. "And her name?"

1. There were no immediate results to this awakening, for Carrie hadlittle power of initiative; but, nevertheless, she seemed evercapable of getting herself into the tide of change where shewould be easily borne along. Hurstwood noticed nothing. He hadbeen unconscious of the marked contrasts which Carrie hadobserved.
2. Hurstwood was looking into the paper. He could not see the lookof infinite weariness and discontent Carrie gave him.
3. "What is your address?" inquired a young lady behind the counter, taking up the curtailed conversation.
4. In a few more minutes it fell to her to read the letter sent inby the strange villain. The audience had been slightly divertedby a conversation between the professional actor and a charactercalled Snorky, impersonated by a short little American, whoreally developed some humour as a half-crazed, one-armed soldier, turned messenger for a living. He bawled his lines out with suchdefiance that, while they really did not partake of the humourintended, they were funny. Now he was off, however, and it wasback to pathos, with Carrie as the chief figure. She did notrecover. She wandered through the whole scene between herselfand the intruding villain, straining the patience of theaudience, and finally exiting, much to their relief.
5. "No. Where, I wonder?"
6. They listened a few moments in silence, touched by the samefeeling, only hers reached her through the heart. Music stillcharmed her as in the old days.

1. "I don't know, sir," said Olsen. "We have about all the help weneed. I think I could find something, sir, though, if you like."
2. "I don't know," replied the drummer. "They've been trying to getme to get some woman to take a part."
3. "Asparagus."
4. When Carrie renewed her search, as she did the next day, going tothe Casino, she found that in the opera chorus, as in otherfields, employment is difficult to secure. Girls who can standin a line and look pretty are as numerous as labourers who canswing a pick. She found there was no discrimination between oneand the other of applicants, save as regards a conventionalstandard of prettiness and form. Their own opinion or knowledgeof their ability went for nothing.
5. "Then you do care for him?" said Drouet, stopping completely andexperiencing a rush of feeling.
6. "So you want something to do," said Mr. Brown, after he inquiredconcerning the nature of her errand. "Have you ever beenemployed in a shoe factory before?"

1. "So it looks," said Carrie, whose nerves were quieting under thesound of the rain drops, driven by a gusty wind, as the trainswept on frantically through the shadow to a newer world.
2. At last the final day came. When it actually arrived, Hurstwood, who had got his mind into such a state where a thunderclap andraging storm would have seemed highly appropriate, was ratherrelieved to find that it was a plain, ordinary day. The sunshone, the temperature was pleasant. He felt, as he came to thebreakfast table, that it wasn't so terrible, after all.
3. "I see," said Carrie, and then, half-smiling to be agreeable, shewalked out.
4、 Hurstwood pricked up his ears. There was a note in her voicewhich vibrated keenly.
5、 "Sothern," said Vance, "in 'Lord Chumley.'"

{ These miserable details ate the heart out of Carrie. Theyblackened her days and grieved her soul. Oh, how this man hadchanged! All day and all day, here he sat, reading his papers. The world seemed to have no attraction. Once in a while he wouldgo out, in fine weather, it might be four or five hours, betweeneleven and four. She could do nothing but view him with gnawingcontempt.

After the occurrence of Wednesday, he could not refuse, thoughthe Phillips were about as uninteresting as vanity and ignorancecould make them. He agreed, but it was with short grace. He wasangry when he left the house.
