1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "You must not say that," she said, weakly.
2. "I get twelve," said Carrie.
3. "I'll look in at Hooley's," thought he, but as a matter of facthe did not. Before he had reached the central portion of thecity he thought the whole matter over and decided it would beuseless. As much as he longed to see Carrie, he knew she wouldbe with some one and did not wish to intrude with his plea there.A little later he might do so--in the morning. Only in themorning he had the lawyer question before him.
4. "I hadn't thought of it," returned Carrie.
5. "Yes," she answered.
6. "I couldn't get home," he said, when he came in later in theevening, "I was so busy."

计划指导

1. The more he thought, however, the more wretched his situationbecame. He saw that getting here did not exactly clear up theground. The firm would probably employ detectives to watch him--Pinkerton men or agents of Mooney and Boland. They might arresthim the moment he tried to leave Canada. So he might becompelled to remain here months, and in what a state!
2. "What made you deceive me so?" asked Carrie.
3. These little expeditions took up her time until quite fouro'clock, when she was weary enough to go home. She felt as ifshe ought to continue and inquire elsewhere, but the results sofar were too dispiriting. She took the car and arrived at OgdenPlace in three-quarters of an hour, but decided to ride on to theWest Side branch of the Post-office, where she was accustomed toreceive Hurstwood's letters. There was one there now, writtenSaturday, which she tore open and read with mingled feelings. There was so much warmth in it and such tense complaint at herhaving failed to meet him, and her subsequent silence, that sherather pitied the man. That he loved her was evident enough. That he had wished and dared to do so, married as he was, was theevil. She felt as if the thing deserved an answer, andconsequently decided that she would write and let him know thatshe knew of his married state and was justly incensed at hisdeception. She would tell him that it was all over between them.
4. She received the answer in silence and backed awkwardly out. Thepleasant nature of her reception rather astonished her. She hadexpected that it would be more difficult, that something cold andharsh would be said--she knew not what. That she had not beenput to shame and made to feel her unfortunate position, seemedremarkable.
5. Drouet hesitated, now that he was in her presence, uncertain asto what course to pursue. He was no diplomat. He could neitherread nor see.
6. "Well, you can bet that you're all right," said Drouet. "You cantake my word for that. You won't fail."

推荐功能

1. "Oh, over two thousand dollars. He says it's a dandy."
2. Carrie turned before the glass. She could not help feelingpleased as she looked at herself. A warm glow crept into hercheeks.
3. During the last three months of the Warren Street connection,Hurstwood took parts of days off and hunted, tracking thebusiness advertisements. It was a more or less depressingbusiness, wholly because of the thought that he must soon getsomething or he would begin to live on the few hundred dollars hewas saving, and then he would have nothing to invest--he wouldhave to hire out as a clerk.
4. Mrs. Hurstwood gave this bit of information considerable thoughtduring the next few hours, and even days. She took it forgranted that the doctor had really seen her husband, and that hehad been riding, most likely, with some other woman, afterannouncing himself as BUSY to her. As a consequence, sherecalled, with rising feeling, how often he had refused to go toplaces with her, to share in little visits, or, indeed, take partin any of the social amenities which furnished the diversion ofher existence. He had been seen at the theatre with people whomhe called Moy's friends; now he was seen driving, and, mostlikely, would have an excuse for that. Perhaps there were othersof whom she did not hear, or why should he be so busy, soindifferent, of late? In the last six weeks he had becomestrangely irritable--strangely satisfied to pick up and go out, whether things were right or wrong in the house. Why?
5. At eleven o'clock of another evening, perhaps two weeks later, hewas at the midnight offering of a loaf--waiting patiently. Ithad been an unfortunate day with him, but now he took his fatewith a touch of philosophy. If he could secure no supper, or washungry late in the evening, here was a place he could come. Afew minutes before twelve, a great box of bread was pushed out,and exactly on the hour a portly, round-faced German tookposition by it, calling "Ready." The whole line at once movedforward each taking his loaf in turn and going his separate way.On this occasion, the ex-manager ate his as he went plodding thedark streets in silence to his bed.
6. "Did she see you?" she asked, expressing her full despair. This cut Hurstwood like a whip, and made him sullen.

1. Transplantation is not always successful in the matter of flowersor maidens. It requires sometimes a richer soil, a betteratmosphere to continue even a natural growth. It would have beenbetter if her acclimatization had been more gradual--less rigid. She would have done better if she had not secured a position soquickly, and had seen more of the city which she constantlytroubled to know about.
2. "Oh, not yet," she answered. "I don't want to play any more, though."
3. "Well," he said, jokingly, "I'll come and get you one of theseevenings," and then he laughed.
4、 "I don't know. I don't suppose so." Then, lifting his handgraciously, "For the lodge."
5、 It was in this mood that he would occasionally dress up, go for ashave, and, putting on his gloves, sally forth quite actively. Not with any definite aim. It was more a barometric condition. He felt just right for being outside and doing something.

Back at the hotel Hurstwood was anxious and yet fearful to seethe morning papers. He wanted to know how far the news of hiscriminal deed had spread. So he told Carrie he would be up in afew moments, and went to secure and scan the dailies. Nofamiliar or suspicious faces were about, and yet he did not likereading in the lobby, so he sought the main parlour on the floorabove and, seated by a window there, looked them over. Verylittle was given to his crime, but it was there, several "sticks"in all, among all the riffraff of telegraphed murders, accidents, marriages, and other news. He wished, half sadly, that he couldundo it all. Every moment of his time in this far-off abode ofsafety but added to his feeling that he had made a great mistake. There could have been an easier way out if he had only known.

Now the crier called the train ready and they got on. Hurstwoodbreathed a sigh of relief as it started. There was a short runto the river, and there they were ferried over. They had barelypulled the train off the ferry-boat when he settled back with asigh.

In the morning he came over from the hotel and opened his mail, but there was nothing in it outside the ordinary run. For somereason he felt as if something might come that way, and wasrelieved when all the envelopes had been scanned and nothingsuspicious noticed. He began to feel the appetite that had beenwanting before he had reached the office, and decided beforegoing out to the park to meet Carrie to drop in at the GrandPacific and have a pot of coffee and some rolls. While thedanger had not lessened, it had not as yet materialised, and withhim no news was good news. If he could only get plenty of timeto think, perhaps something would turn up. Surely, surely, thisthing would not drift along to catastrophe and he not find a wayout.

"You are," stamped Carrie. "You're a horrid, conceited coward, that's what you are. If you had any sense of manhood in you, youwouldn't have thought of doing any such thing."

The rooms which Mr. Withers displayed to Carrie and Lola werethree and bath--a suite on the parlour floor. They were done inchocolate and dark red, with rugs and hangings to match. Threewindows looked down into busy Broadway on the east, three into aside street which crossed there. There were two lovely bedrooms, set with brass and white enamel beds, white ribbon-trimmed chairsand chiffoniers to match. In the third room, or parlour, was apiano, a heavy piano lamp, with a shade of gorgeous pattern, alibrary table, several huge easy rockers, some dado book shelves, and a gilt curio case, filled with oddities. Pictures were uponthe walls, soft Turkish pillows upon the divan footstools ofbrown plush upon the floor. Such accommodations would ordinarilycost a hundred dollars a week.

      "Certainly," said Drouet. "Eh, Carrie?"
