1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 She made no answer.
2. "Is it in Chicago?" she asked nervously. They were now farbeyond the city limits, and the train was scudding across theIndiana line at a great rate.
3. The drummer stared.
4. "There's a gang out there," he said, "laying for us yet. Bettersend some one over there and clean them out."
5. For an hour he thought over this plausible statement of thetangle. He wanted to tell them about his wife, but couldn't. Hefinally narrowed it down to an assertion that he was light-headedfrom entertaining friends, had found the safe open, and havinggone so far as to take the money out, had accidentally closed it.This act he regretted very much. He was sorry he had put them toso much trouble. He would undo what he could by sending themoney back--the major portion of it. The remainder he would payup as soon as he could. Was there any possibility of his beingrestored? This he only hinted at.
6. Now, as on each preceding day, letters were handed her by thedoorman at the Casino. This was a feature which had rapidlydeveloped since Monday. What they contained she well knew. MASHNOTES were old affairs in their mildest form. She rememberedhaving received her first one far back in Columbia City. Sincethen, as a chorus girl, she had received others--gentlemen whoprayed for an engagement. They were common sport between her andLola, who received some also. They both frequently made light ofthem.

1. "Oh, fine; sold him a complete line. There was another fellowthere, representing Burnstein, a regular hook-nosed sheeny, buthe wasn't in it. I made him look like nothing at all."
2. That night at the flat she was even more lonely--the dullsituation was becoming harder to endure. She could see that theHansons seldom or never had any company. Standing at the streetdoor looking out, she ventured to walk out a little way. Hereasy gait and idle manner attracted attention of an offensive butcommon sort. She was slightly taken back at the overtures of awell-dressed man of thirty, who in passing looked at her, reducedhis pace, turned back, and said:
3. "No; he said he wouldn't be home for dinner."
4. Carrie noticed this, and in scanning it the price of springchicken carried her back to that other bill of fare and fardifferent occasion when, for the first time, she sat with Drouetin a good restaurant in Chicago. It was only momentary--a sadnote as out of an old song--and then it was gone. But in thatflash was seen the other Carrie--poor, hungry, drifting at herwits' ends, and all Chicago a cold and closed world, from whichshe only wandered because she could not find work.
5. "Wife here?"
6. "Yes," said Hurstwood, "I have a place down in Warren Street."

1. "What makes you stare at me so? What's the matter?"
2. "How much are you going to get?" asked Miss Osborne, on hearingthe good news.
3. "Well, I tell you, he does it fine."
4. "Yes," said Carrie innocently, feeling now that Hurstwood musthave mentioned but one call.
5. No reply.
6. The nature of these vast retail combinations, should they everpermanently disappear, will form an interesting chapter in thecommercial history of our nation. Such a flowering out of amodest trade principle the world had never witnessed up to thattime. They were along the line of the most effective retailorganisation, with hundreds of stores coordinated into one andlaid out upon the most imposing and economic basis. They werehandsome, bustling, successful affairs, with a host of clerks anda swarm of patrons. Carrie passed along the busy aisles, muchaffected by the remarkable displays of trinkets, dress goods, stationery, and jewelry. Each separate counter was a show placeof dazzling interest and attraction. She could not help feelingthe claim of each trinket and valuable upon her personally, andyet she did not stop. There was nothing there which she couldnot have used--nothing which she did not long to own. The daintyslippers and stockings, the delicately frilled skirts andpetticoats, the laces, ribbons, hair-combs, purses, all touchedher with individual desire, and she felt keenly the fact that notany of these things were in the range of her purchase. She was awork-seeker, an outcast without employment, one whom the averageemployee could tell at a glance was poor and in need of asituation.

1. "You're a determined little miss, aren't you?" he said, after afew moments, looking up into her eyes.
3. "I don't know," said Minnie.
4、 "Oh, you want to see Mr. McManus," he returned. "Sit down," andhe pointed to a chair against the neighbouring wall. He went onleisurely writing, until after a time a short, stout gentlemancame in from the street.
5、 "I want to see the manager," she said.He ran away and spoke to one of a group of three men who wereconferring together. One of these came towards her.

When Hanson came home at seven o'clock, he was inclined to be alittle crusty--his usual demeanour before supper. This nevershowed so much in anything he said as in a certain solemnity ofcountenance and the silent manner in which he slopped about. Hehad a pair of yellow carpet slippers which he enjoyed wearing, and these he would immediately substitute for his solid pair ofshoes. This, and washing his face with the aid of common washingsoap until it glowed a shiny red, constituted his onlypreparation for his evening meal. He would then get his eveningpaper and read in silence.
