1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "No, sir," said Carrie.
2. It was a funny English story he was telling to a company ofactors. Even as his voice recalled him, he was smiling. Acrusty old codger, sitting near by, seemed disturbed; at least,he stared in a most pointed way. Hurstwood straightened up. Thehumour of the memory fled in an instant and he felt ashamed. Forrelief, he left his chair and strolled out into the streets.
3. Curiously, she could not hold the money in her hand withoutfeeling some relief. Even after all her depressing conclusions, she could sweep away all thought about the matter and then thetwenty dollars seemed a wonderful and delightful thing. Ah,money, money, money! What a thing it was to have. How plenty ofit would clear away all these troubles.
4. "I see," he said. "Do you live here in the city?"
5. "Never mind what you were just. Keep your ears open."
6. Hurstwood's gloom over the slight decrease in profits and thedeparture of the Vances came together. So Carrie had lonelinessand this mood of her husband to enjoy at the same time. It was agrievous thing. She became restless and dissatisfied, notexactly, as she thought, with Hurstwood, but with life. What wasit? A very dull round indeed. What did she have? Nothing butthis narrow, little flat. The Vances could travel, they could dothe things worth doing, and here she was. For what was she made, anyhow? More thought followed, and then tears--tears seemedjustified, and the only relief in the world.

1. Mrs. Hale, from her upper window, saw her come in.
2. "You must marry me, though," she said."I'll get a license to-day," he answered.
3. Across the lobby, however, another individual was surveying him.He was of a commonplace Irish type, small of stature, cheaplydressed, and with a head that seemed a smaller edition of somehuge ward politician's. This individual had been evidentlytalking with the clerk, but now he surveyed the ex-managerkeenly.
4. "Captain's a great feller, ain't he?" said the man ahead--alittle, woebegone, helpless-looking sort of individual, wholooked as though he had ever been the sport and care of fortune.
5. Back of him, where some of those were whose beds were safe, arelaxed air was apparent. The strain of uncertainty beingremoved, he heard them talking with moderate freedom and someleaning toward sociability. Politics, religion, the state of thegovernment, some newspaper sensations, and the more notoriousfacts the world over, found mouthpieces and auditors there.Cracked and husky voices pronounced forcibly upon odd matters.Vague and rambling observations were made in reply.
6. "Think we're liable to have much trouble?" said another, whomHurstwood did not see.

1. "No," answered the latter, "he's in his room. Do you wish tosend up a card?""No, I'll call around later," answered Hurstwood, and strolledout.
2. "I should think we could get a smaller place," he suggested. "Wedon't need four rooms."
3. "It's funny how anxious these women are to get on the stage."
4. They had come out of the lobby and made their way through theshowy crush about the entrance way.
5. He had no thought that this was in her mind--that any removalwould be suggested.
6. Then came a week in which the first fruits of success wereoffered to her lips--bowl after bowl. It did not matter that hersplendid salary had not begun. The world seemed satisfied withthe promise. She began to get letters and cards. A Mr. Withers--whom she did not know from Adam--having learned by some hook orcrook where she resided, bowed himself politely in.

1. It was when Carrie was alone, looking out across the park, thatshe would be listening to this. It would come infrequently--whensomething else did not interfere, when the pleasant side was nottoo apparent, when Drouet was not there. It was somewhat clearin utterance at first, but never wholly convincing. There wasalways an answer, always the December days threatened. She wasalone; she was desireful; she was fearful of the whistling wind. The voice of want made answer for her.
2. Carrie's first call was upon Mrs. Bermudez, whose address wasquite the nearest. It was an old-fashioned residence turned intooffices. Mrs. Bermudez's offices consisted of what formerly hadbeen a back chamber and a hall bedroom, marked "Private."
3. And yet she was not grieved at Hurstwood's love. No strain ofbitterness was in it for her, whatever he knew. He was evidentlysincere. His passion was real and warm. There was power in whathe said. What should she do? She went on thinking this, answering vaguely, languishing affectionately, and altogetherdrifting, until she was on a borderless sea of speculation.
4、 "Yes. I'm from Wisconsin," she answered.
5、 He chatted on at a great rate, asking questions, explainingthings about himself, telling her what a good restaurant it was, until the waiter returned with an immense tray, bearing the hotsavoury dishes which had been ordered. Drouet fairly shone inthe matter of serving. He appeared to great advantage behind thewhite napery and silver platters of the table and displaying hisarms with a knife and fork. As he cut the meat his rings almostspoke. His new suit creaked as he stretched to reach the plates, break the bread, and pour the coffee. He helped Carrie to arousing plateful and contributed the warmth of his spirit to herbody until she was a new girl. He was a splendid fellow in thetrue popular understanding of the term, and captivated Carriecompletely.
