1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 Hurstwood held to his brake and lever, pale and very uncertainwhat to do.
2. "You've never worked at anything like this before, have you?" hequestioned, rather sternly.
3. "Out where?" inquired Hurstwood.
4. "Let's go over and look at the jackets," he said.
5. "Well," said Carrie, hesitating how to begin, "do you get placesfor persons upon the stage?"
6. "If we could have such a home as that," said Mrs. Hale sadly,"how delightful it would be."

1. The one thought that strengthened him was the insult offered byCarrie. He was not down so low as to take all that, he thought. He could do something--this, even--for a while. It would getbetter. He would save a little.
2. "All right," he said, brightening.
3. "Let's go to the matinee this afternoon," said Mrs. Vance, whohad stepped across into Carrie's flat one morning, still arrayedin a soft pink dressing-gown, which she had donned upon rising.Hurstwood and Vance had gone their separate ways nearly an hourbefore.
4. It was customary for them to discuss the regular summer outing atthis season of the year.
5. "Well," he said to Carrie, "to-day's my last day on earth."
6. "Oh, no," said Drouet, "that won't do. How long have you beenlooking?"

1. The second time he gave a similar excuse, but the third time thefeeling about it in Carrie's mind was a little bit out of theordinary.
2. "You don't want to live with those people?" he said in one place, abstractedly. Carrie heard it, but it made only a slightimpression.
3. Carrie received this Tuesday morning when she called at the WestSide branch of the post-office, and answered at once.
4. "Couldn't help it," said the drummer, "I've been busy."
5. "Where?"
6. Some one was at the head showing rooms, so that there was nodelay for keys. Toiling up the creaky stairs, Hurstwood lookedback and saw the captain, watching; the last one of the linebeing included in his broad solicitude. Then he gathered hiscloak about him and strolled out into the night.

1. "Wha--what's the matter?" said Minnie, drowsily.
2. Carrie felt the train to be slowing down. It was the moment toact if she was to act at all. She stirred uneasily.
3. "How much are you going to get?" asked Miss Osborne, on hearingthe good news.
4、 The manager started, hit as he was by a problem which was moredifficult than hers. He gave no sign of the thoughts thatflashed like messages to his mind.
5、 "Oh, have you?" said the man. "What experience have you had?"

"No; frown," he said. "Frown as you did before."

When Hurstwood got back to his office again he was in a greaterquandary than ever. Lord, Lord, he thought, what had he gotinto? How could things have taken such a violent turn, and soquickly? He could hardly realise how it had all come about. Itseemed a monstrous, unnatural, unwarranted condition which hadsuddenly descended upon him without his let or hindrance.

This pleased Hurstwood immensely. He gave Drouet no credit forany feelings toward Carrie whatever. He envied him, and now, ashe looked at the well-dressed jolly salesman, whom he so muchliked, the gleam of the rival glowed in his eye. He began to"size up" Drouet from the standpoints of wit and fascination. Hebegan to look to see where he was weak. There was no disputingthat, whatever he might think of him as a good fellow, he felt acertain amount of contempt for him as a lover. He could hoodwinkhim all right. Why, if he would just let Carrie see one suchlittle incident as that of Thursday, it would settle the matter. He ran on in thought, almost exulting, the while he laughed andchatted, and Drouet felt nothing. He had no power of analysingthe glance and the atmosphere of a man like Hurstwood. He stoodand smiled and accepted the invitation while his friend examinedhim with the eye of a hawk.

That little soldier of fortune took her good turn in an easy way.She felt a little out of place, but the great room soothed herand the view of the well-dressed throng outside seemed a splendidthing. Ah, what was it not to have money! What a thing it wasto be able to come in here and dine! Drouet must be fortunate. He rode on trains, dressed in such nice clothes, was so strong, and ate in these fine places. He seemed quite a figure of a man,and she wondered at his friendship and regard for her.

"Then I noticed that that was your natural look, and to-night Isaw it again. There's a shadow about your eyes, too, which givesyour face much this same character. It's in the depth of them, Ithink."

{ A man of Hurstwood's age and temperament is not subject to theillusions and burning desires of youth, but neither has he thestrength of hope which gushes as a fountain in the heart ofyouth. Such an atmosphere could not incite in him the cravingsof a boy of eighteen, but in so far as they were excited, thelack of hope made them proportionately bitter. He could not failto notice the signs of affluence and luxury on every hand. Hehad been to New York before and knew the resources of its folly. In part it was an awesome place to him, for here gathered allthat he most respected on this earth--wealth, place, and fame. The majority of the celebrities with whom he had tipped glassesin his day as manager hailed from this self-centred and populousspot. The most inviting stories of pleasure and luxury had beentold of places and individuals here. He knew it to be true thatunconsciously he was brushing elbows with fortune the livelongday; that a hundred or five hundred thousand gave no one theprivilege of living more than comfortably in so wealthy a place.Fashion and pomp required more ample sums, so that the poor manwas nowhere. All this he realised, now quite sharply, as hefaced the city, cut off from his friends, despoiled of his modestfortune, and even his name, and forced to begin the battle forplace and comfort all over again. He was not old, but he was notso dull but that he could feel he soon would be. Of a sudden, then, this show of fine clothes, place, and power took onpeculiar significance. It was emphasised by contrast with hisown distressing state.
